This beautiful creature would be far more intriguing in a zoo rather than out my front door. As I stepped outside this evening, I thought of Alfred Hitchcock. The vineyard is rich with all sorts of wild life, and each year brings a new variety to life. I did a simple Google search for "giant green moth" and discovered that this fabulous beast is called a Luna Moth:
Luna Moths are members of the Saturniidae family, also known as the "Giant Silkworm Moths." Luna Moths are huge moths, with a wingspan of four and a half inches. They have a white body, pinkish legs, and huge pale green wings. The hindwings have eyespots and long tails. They fly, only at night, in Spring and early Summer.
you could frame that picture. especially with that textured background.

reminds me of the silence of the lambs.............
ReplyDeleteFound one of those stuck to my screen door this morning. I have to say, looking at it from the other side (as one does when viewing through the screen) is creepier -- this way it just looks lovely.
ReplyDeletewe saw one last night , sooo beautiful. unfortunatly this morning our bulldog ate it. :(
ReplyDeleteI had one on my green wall and it stayed there until it died. Now I have it in a frame
ReplyDeleteWe found one that flew into my kitchen last night. I didn't know these existed in Northern KY. Wonderful treat, then we set him free.
ReplyDeleteFunny, I did a google search for "giant green moth" as well. What I found was your site, and I now know that what I've seen is a Luna Moth.
ReplyDeleteI was in Vermont a week ago and I came back to my friend's house one night to find two of these creatures parked on his front door. I took pictures, putting my hand next to it provide context.
A couple of days before that the sliding doors at the back of my friend's house had been open and a giant moth flew in, but it was not a Luna Moth. This was a more traditional moth, just huge. Its body was far bigger than the Luna Moths and its wings were about the same size. It was bigger than a hummingbird. I captured it and released it outside.
Nature is neat.
