New Red Lipstick for Valentine's Day

Lipstick enthusiasts, or almost every woman that is, will be happy to know about a new perfect shade of red on the market. It's called Red for Me. From the NY Post:
"Maybelline’s lead makeup artist, Grace Lee, used the product on more than 50 models — including Candice Huffine and Winnie Harlow, who has vitiligo — at the Cushnie runway show.
“I swear it’s like witchcraft cuz it really does look incredible on every skin tone,” Lee wrote on Instagram."

Tangerine Shoes

Love 'em or hate 'em?  I can't tell yet, but love that I paid $39 at TJ Maxx for these little jelly numbers.  They're well made comfort by Taryn Rose, an orthopedic doctor-turned-shoe designer, and retail on Zappos for $90.  About five years ago, I paid a ton of money for a pair of her ballet slipper-type shoes, and never regretted it.  Still wearing them, in fact.  Be good to your feet.

Uggs Are Everywhere!

Here's the great Manolo's take on the fashion phenomena:
...if you are sixteen and super cute, then the Classic Uggs are “da bomb”. You may wear them everywhere (even with your sweat pants) and people will still think you are the cutesy cute cutey.

If , however, you are the forty-two year old woman of sophistication, then the Classic Ugg boots look silly with almost everything you try on.
Sweat pants? Sloppy!
Faded blue jeans? Trying too hard!
Shortish skirt? Trashy!

The truth is, the Ugg Classic boots, like the dirty ripped blue jeans and the whale-tail thong, are the young person’s fashion. They were designed by the youthful Australian surfers for wearing after the energetically youthful day at the beach, not for women of the certain age to slip on for the day on the town.

Happily, there are the Ugg models which can be worn by elegant ladies. For the example, here is the Gissella, the casual, wedge-heel ankle boot with the Aussie flair.

I'm not so sure I agree with Manolo on the Uggs, and I'm not so sure I agree with Lee, the blognephew's fashionista wife, on her facebook status:
"Once you're out of college, you're too old for a back pack."

InStyle Magazine? No, Just Ally

With time at a premium, the days of leisurely flipping though a magazine seem few and far between. Luckily, I have the blogstepdaughter, Ally, to keep me advised of the latest trends in fashion. With a long-term career in the fashion industry, and a life-long passion for all things fashionable, Ally is my walking and talking consultant on new and useful products and styles. Ally and husband, Paul, are spending a couple days with us on the island.

The Best of New York

Trying to do our part to stimulate the economy, the blogfriends and I spent a fabulous twenty-four hours in the Big Apple. We hit Bloomingdales, Barneys, Bendels and Bergdorfs to size up the latest fashion trends. We did some girlie-girl stuff, laughed our heads off with a few comedians at Gotham Comedy Club and took in the pub scene at P.J. Clark's. INY.

Aretha's Hat

Aretha Franklin did a beautiful rendition of My Country 'Tis of Thee at the inauguration, but I'm not so sure about the hat.

Miracle Undergarments

There's something about that smooth, shapely effect that only Spanx can give your silhouette.  I've been a big fan of the spandex under garments for a few years now, and own a couple varieties.  They are particularly useful at this time of the year, when tubbiness sets in for a month or two.  Well, now they are making Spanx for men.  Six packs don't only have to be in the fridge!

Fifty Year History of the Peace Sign

From The Frisky
"Back in 1958, textile designer and commercial artist Gerald Holton designed a symbol for peace activists to put on their protest posters. The image he created was a combination of the letters N, for nuclear, and D, for disarmament, and it still represents peace 50 years later. The popularity and connotation of the peace sign has changed over time. It was used by Vietnam war protesters in the ‘60s, and 30 years after that, my friends and I wore peace sign necklaces just because they looked cool. In celebration of the symbol’s anniversary, designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Proenza Schouler, and Alexander Wang have designed outfits inspired by the peace sign. (If you live in NYC, check them out in the windows at Barneys.)"

I'm not seeing the N, though.

Prada Ankle Boot

Classic styling and quality craftsmanship for years of wear and enjoyment.  A splurge by any standard, but in this economic environment, it could prove to be a most practical investment.  It's anyone's guess how the banking and mortgage debacle is going to shake out on Wall Street over the next weeks, but the word "catastrophic" has been used frequently over the weekend.  I did some shopping today, just in case.
